Everybody can have a bright idea that might turn out to be a good product, even if you lack the money and the technical expertise needed to implement it. You can secure the investment and simply outsource product development and management in operations, so you can concentrate on growing your business.
Today we list (in no particular order) 50 startups from Ukraine that turned their ideas into great products and became a global success. Some of these startups outsourced the development of their products, some outsourced marketing, some built their production facilities in China — but the course of action all of them chose was correct.
All of them are known worldwide (though to a different degree) and all of them are listed as Active on Crunchbase, meaning they are still operating profitably. All you need to achieve this is an idea of how to solve a real-world problem (and do it better than the competition) implemented in a functional, easy-to-use and appealing product. Outsourcing helps a great deal with that, due to giving access to a pool of talented specialists, which reduces the time-to-market and development risks for your product, along with supporting its steady future growth.

Dmitriy Sergeev founded DepositPhotos in a basement office in Kyiv back in 2009. The website development was booming and content creators needed tons of DRM-free vector images and photos. A small team developed a convenient UI and several affordable subscription plans, which resulted in one of the 5 biggest photobanks worldwide 10 years later.
This startup attracted $5 million in 2015 from TMT Investments and EBRD when it already was a successfully growing product. Currently, DepositPhotos is headquartered in Florida, the US, has several international offices, employs more than 400 people and provides services in more than 190 countries, with estimated annual revenue topping $17 million.
However, Dmitriy Sergeev does not want to be remembered only as the creator of a photobank. In one of his interviews he stated that he is a serial entrepreneur by nature, and if an opportunity to do something great (and earn money) presents itself — like flying to the Mars with Musk — he will jump straight to it.

“We used IT outsourcing a couple of times: we had a code-review by an outsourcing firm and we had illustrations/icons/badges done by another outsourcing firm. They were both positive high-quality experiences, though the illustrations were a bit more expensive than going direct.
Juke
Generally, IT outsourcing is good in proving an MVP to validate a market that a company isn’t 100% sure on pursuing. It is also viable for limited scope projects, as opposed to ever-increasing features, and also useful for needs when needing to rapidly scale and have lots of funding.”

Comment from Address.ua team representative, Maxim:
We had a coding-for-equity contract with an IT outsourcing company. We had a group of engineers previously working on other online classifieds such as rabota.ua and turne.ua, and we agreed the R&D-4-equity model allowed us to save precious cash at the early stage. The IT outsourcing model is highly recommendable. But at the end of the day it’s not a model that matters — it is the people you deal with and the terms you agree with them. I’ve seen a lot of companies fail at that model, however it worked perfectly for Address.ua
Maxim
